GTA 6 Cyberleek Update

With just a few days to go before Grand Theft Auto VI makes its big official debut (of sorts) on Netflix, the leaker known as Cyberleek is still on a tear.Over the past week, someone (or perhaps a group of people) called Cyberleek has been busy sharing short gameplay clips of GTA VI left and right. On Aug. 20, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of GTA-maker Rockstar Games, filed subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord to try to unmask the leaker. Those filings specifically cited "stolen content," seemingly confirming that at least some of the Cyberleek videos are legitimate.

The GTA 6 leaks represent the first glimpse of gameplay from the hotly anticipated title. In addition, countless AI-generated videos posing as "leaks" are also circulating widely on social media. So, we've put together a quick list of everything Cyberleek has released so far. We're not going to embed or link to any of these clips, and we can't verify their authenticity. However, they're easy enough to find on X or Reddit if you look hard enough.

A major reason is the way the hacking group is disseminating information. Cyberleek is hosting the leak site via Arweave, a decentralized protocol that retains information permanently. Data uploaded to Arweave is stored and replicated by miners, similar to how cryptocurrency networks operate. In theory, this means that it is impossible to fully remove the Cyberleek website — provided the hackers paid a one-time charge. The nature of this GTA 6 leak is the first of its kind, so there's no precedent for how to control it.

We're nearly a week into the unprecedented Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, with no sign of the perputrators slowing down. The unusual situation has pushed Rockstar, the developer, into totally new territory. And as Cyberleek, the hackers, continue to evade identification, the group has started to become emboldened by the anonymity and leverage.

Rockstar and Take-Two haven't sat by idly, however. In addition to last week's subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord in an attempt to uncover the hacking group's identity, the publisher has most recently issued a court order against social media site X to do the same. And though the game proprietors have remained mum publicly, internally, it's a different story. A Bloomberg report claims that leaders at Rockstar are "angry" that the game has suffered a second set of leaks. The game had already suffered a major leak back in 2023, leading the developer to adopt stricter security measures. The new protocols did not help prevent the latest set of leaks. As of yet, the publisher has not determined how the breach occurred. Workers at the company are feeling "frustrated and exhausted," according to Bloomberg.

Since that report came out, things have only worsened. The hacking group changed its Contact page to offer potential ad placements and custom-made gameplay for an undisclosed charge. In addition to holding fan votes on what to release next, Cyberleek has also started monetizing those choices. The recent strip club leak only occurred after fans were able to raise Cyberleek's cryptocurrency to a market cap of $3 million. It seemingly only took hours for the group to raise those millions.

The latest nude town leak goes one step further. In addition to encouraging a fan vote, there is an extra stipulation before Cyberleek will release more footage. "To show support, at least 10 gamers need to show up dressed as leeks in front of Take2/Rock* offices holding game discs during working hours."

The hacking group has asserted that they are motivated by a desire to punish Take-Two and Rockstar for the decision to release GTA 6 without a physical disc. Despite that apparent activist bent, as time has gone on, the hacking group has taken every opportunity to line its own pockets. It remains to be seen if anyone will actually fulfill Cyberleek's demand to mock Rockstar and Take-Two on their own turf, but it's not impossible. Just a few months ago, a YouTuber was arrested after attempting to walk into Rockstar's Edinburgh office.

At the time of publication, several clips and screenshots have been posted by Cyberleek that purportedly show different aspects of GTA 6, from the game's map to glimpses of cut scenes. The leaker has avoided posting major plot spoilers, at least so far.

  • Map sneak peek 1: A small, cropped portion of the in-game world map, showing a location called Dalton Island.

  • Map sneak peek 2: Another cropped portion of the map showing locations called Tequesta Retreat, Gloriana Key, and Catalan Key.

  • Basketball video: A clip of protagonist Jason Duval throwing a basketball into a hoop in a mini-game.

  • Full map: An alleged view of the entire in-game map.

  • Random video 1: A clip of Jason driving around for a little bit before beating up a truck driver.

  • Taser video: A clip of Jason driving at night, stealing a security guard's taser, and using it on him. Jason then repeatedly kicks the guard while he is on the ground.

  • Junkies video: A clip that appears to show a healing drug called Zombix. A tooltip indicates that Zombix's effects will weaken over time if the player uses it too much.

  • Plane video: A clip of Jason flying a plane over Vice City, with much of the game world visible below. At the end, whoever is playing the game in the clip shoots the word "LEEK" into a wall with bullets, suggesting the leaker has a playable build of the game.

  • Hypercar part 1: A clip of Jason driving a high-end sports car around Vice City.

  • Hypercar part 2: A clip of Jason driving the sports car some more, before committing armed robbery.

  • Strip club: Jason wanders around a strip club, then a short clip of an in-game cutscene is shown.

  • Gas station: Jason causes trouble at a gas station, steals a truck with a bed full of gasoline, and crashes and dies; more of the previous cutscene is shown.

  • Nudist colony: Jason explores a nudist hangout spot (where the NPCs are, obviously, nude) and attacks NPCs

Again, we can't authenticate any of the Cyberleek videos. That said, as someone who has played nearly every GTA game, I found them fairly convincing. GTA games all move in a certain way, and that movement appears to be recreated remarkably well in these videos. Everything from character movement to NPC interactions looks relatively on-brand for a modern Rockstar game. That said, we live in a world where it's easy to generate convincing AI videos.

As for what's next, we can't say. But Cyberleek is actively running polls on its website that allow people to pay in cryptocurrency to vote on what should be leaked next. You can also wait for real, official gameplay footage, which is set to debut on Netflix on Aug. 27.

So far, Rockstar and Take-Two have said nothing about the leaks outside of the subpoenas filed last week. Mashable has contacted the companies repeatedly with questions about the leaks, and we'll update this story if we receive a response.

With less than a week to go until Rockstar Games shows us official Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay on Netflix, there's even more unofficial gameplay footage leaking online.

Cyberleek, the anonymous leaker who has hit the big time in the last week or so by leaking a steady stream of GTA VI gameplay clips, posted a few more over the weekend and into Monday morning. Mashable is not linking to any of the leaked clips or map images, but they can be pretty easily found on various social networks if you look hard enough.

The nudist colony video appeared to be the winner of the latest poll on CyberLeek's website. Users can vote in the poll by spending cryptocurrency, because, of course, that's how this works. At the time of publication, it's unclear exactly how much of the game CyberLeek has access to, or how they came to access it. While we can't authenticate any of the videos, subpoenas recently filed by Take Two Interactive (the parent company of Rockstar Games), specifically reference stolen material, seemingly confirming the leaks are legit.

The latest GTA 6 leak from Cyberleek sees protagonist Jason Duval take a trip, and a camera, to a nude night party that quickly descends into a shooting.

For all the naked NPCs in this new GTA 6 clip, more attention has been paid to the QR code-backed message laid over the footage. After nearly a dozen clips of random violence and activities, Cyberleek is now threatening to post major story spoilers.

Their message reads: "Do you want a Lucia-led prologue? CL has been evading spoilers. CL just cannot make that decision, so a poll is required, plus, to show support at least 10 gamers need to show up dressed as leeks in front of Take2/Rock

The new nudist party clip is, in short, a gallery of shiny hineys. Male and female NPCs dance and talk in the nude as Jason looks very closely at them through a zoomed sight. Rockstar's attention to detail is on full display, with NPCs showing a range of body types.One female NPC seems to react to Jason's lingering gaze, saying, "You got a friggin' problem or what? What, you want a closer look?" The NPC confronts Jason and, in true GTA fashion, is quickly attacked, sparking a murder spree.Cyberleek has been polling topics of new gameplay footage since last week despite the systematic takedown of its website and mirrors, but this latest post marks a significant escalation. We've yet to see anything of Lucia, for one, nor has the group posted significant story spoilers thus far.With this message, Cyberleek is openly inciting gamers to demonstrate outside the offices of either GTA 6 developer Rockstar or studio owner Take-Two, seemingly to echo the group's so-called "commandments," which oppose baked-in DLC, digital pre-orders, server shutdowns that make single-player content unplayable, and the general end of physical games.

Digital rights and preservationist group Stop Killing Games disavowed Cyberleek in a statement, saying, "Using illegal means to make a point is unacceptable."

Between today's public call to action and charging upwards of $165,000 selling ad space on GTA 6 leaks, Cyberleek has done a fabulous job giving Rockstar lawyers ammunition.

GTA 6 is only available digitally, and the person or group behind Cyberleek previously claimed that the leaks would continue until Rockstar changed its position and "issued a public statement and apology with a concrete commitment to be better."
